The client had kept the sofa hard against the chimney breast for nine years. We shifted it out to get the wand behind, and the back panel came away from the wall carrying a pale grey bloom across the bottom third, silk-thin tubes running along the seam, and the wool weave grazed down to the warp in three patches the size of a beer mat. She had never seen a single moth. That is normal. The adults are small, buff, they run rather than fly, and they keep out of your eyeline for years while their offspring strip the pile off a three thousand pound settee.

Is it moth larvae, or is it carpet beetle?

This is the first question on any survey, and about half my callouts have already answered it wrong before I arrive.

The webbing clothes moth, Tineola bisselliella, does most of the damage in London homes. Its larva is a creamy white grub, blind, slow, usually grazing underneath a loose sheet of silk it spins across the surface as it goes. The case-bearing moth drags a small tube of chewed fibre about with it, dyed whatever colour the fabric happens to be. Trichophaga tapetzella turns up in older properties with original textiles and cuts deeper, more tunnelled channels through the pile.

Then there is Anthrenus verbasci, the varied carpet beetle, whose larva people call a woolly bear. Bristly, brown, banded, quick to move when disturbed, and it sheds a series of translucent skins as it grows. On the balance of what I lift out of upholstery across Greater London, beetle appears far more often than clients expect, and the distinction changes everything, because beetle larvae travel a long way from where they hatched and often breed in a bird’s nest in the eaves rather than in the sofa. Treat the sofa on its own and they walk back in.

Neither adult insect eats anything at all. Adult moths have no functioning mouthparts. Every hole in that seat cushion was chewed by a larva feeding on keratin, which is the protein in wool, horsehair, feather and silk. Kill the adults you can see and you have addressed the part of the life cycle that was never the problem.

What the debris under the cushions tells you

Lift the seat cushions and run a torch along the platform seam. Moth frass looks like fine sand and carries the colour of the fabric, because it is the fabric. Beetle leaves those brittle shed skins, which hold their shape and look like small hollow larvae. Silk sheeting means moth. Skins mean beetle. Both together happens more often than the textbooks suggest, and in a nine-year-old infestation it is close to the default finding. Get that call wrong and every decision after it is wrong.

Why do Victorian and Edwardian flats suit them so well?

The housing stock could have been designed for these insects.

Gaps between original pine boards let a century of dust, human hair and pet hair drop into the void below, and that void sits directly under the sofa legs as a permanent larder. Wool carpet in these properties runs under the skirting rather than stopping short of it, so there is a strip along every wall that no vacuum head has ever touched. The frames use horsehair stuffing, jute webbing and a hessian dust barrier stapled across the underside, all of which the larvae will eat, and the last of which gives them a dark ceiling to feed on from below without ever surfacing.

Central heating changed the arithmetic. A cold flat a hundred years ago gave the webbing moth roughly one generation a year. A flat held at 20°C from October through April gives it two, sometimes three. Populations compound rather than add. Add a south-facing bay in a top-floor conversion where the room sits at 24°C in July and the cycle tightens further, which is why the worst infestations I attend are almost never in the coldest flats.

I took a chaise apart on Elgin Avenue in Maida Vale where the whole hessian underside had gone lacy and the seat above it was untouched. The larvae had never needed to come up.

The half metre nobody vacuums

Under a heavy piece of furniture, along the skirting behind it, and in the dust seal at the base of the frame. Those three zones account for most of the damage I see, and they are the three a fortnightly cleaner cannot reach without shifting eighty kilos of oak. Nobody wants to hear that.

What does a professional clean take out of wool upholstery?

More than people credit, and considerably less than the advertising implies.

Dry vacuuming with a crevice tool takes out live larvae, pupae, cast skins, frass and a fair share of loose eggs. Mechanical removal is the single most useful thing anyone does to an infested sofa. The word carrying the weight there is thorough – along the welt cord, into the platform seam, under the cushions, down the frame rails, and across the underside with the piece tipped onto its back.

Eggs are where the claims fall apart. The female glues each one to a fibre, on purpose, so ordinary handling and ordinary suction leave a proportion of them exactly where she put them. On a tight wool weave you might shift most. On a loose bouclé or a deep chenille loop you will not, and any percentage a technician quotes you for egg removal came out of the air.

Extraction adds flushing to that. Solution wets the yarn, the vacuum stroke pulls embedded frass and grazed fibre fragments the dry pass could not lift, and the piece ends up cleaner in a way that has real bearing on the problem, because larvae prefer wool carrying body oil, perspiration salts and food residue to clean wool. A soiled sofa is a better meal. Cleaning sterilises nothing, but it demotes the sofa on the menu, and on a lightly affected armchair that shift alone has ended the infestation more than once in my experience.

What survives a clean is predictable enough to list on the survey. Pupae wedged into the joint between rail and stretcher, where no nozzle reaches. Eggs deep in horsehair under a fixed calico cover. Anything living in the floor void, in the underlay, or in that strip beneath the skirting. I cleaned a wing chair on Tressillian Road in Brockley twice inside six weeks before working out that the source was a dead pigeon in the light well. The chair was collateral damage the whole time.

Tank temperature is not fabric temperature

Solution leaving the wand at 60°C is not holding wool at 60°C. It touches the surface, sheds heat into the fibre mass and the room within seconds, and never reaches the core of a stuffed arm on any pass. Killing every life stage with heat means holding the whole item above roughly 50°C for half an hour, which describes a heat chamber and not a hand tool. Anyone selling extraction as a moth kill is selling a soil removal service with a story wrapped round it.

Does freezing or chemical treatment kill every stage?

Freezing works, and it is limited by what fits in the freezer.

Protocol matters more than the number on the dial. The item goes from room warmth straight to below minus 18°C, abruptly, because slow cooling lets larvae build cold tolerance. Sealed bag. Seventy-two hours minimum. Thaw it, leave it a fortnight, then repeat, because the first cycle is unreliable against eggs. Removable covers and scatters go in. A three-seater does not.

Residual treatment belongs to a pest controller rather than to me. A licensed technician applies a pyrethroid alongside an insect growth regulator, which stops surviving larvae from ever reaching adulthood and breaks the cycle over the following weeks. Mothballs have dropped out of the conversation entirely – naphthalene came off the domestic market in this country years ago, and the cedar blocks people buy on Portobello Road achieve nothing beyond smelling of cedar.

The fortnight that catches everyone out

Eggs laid before treatment will still hatch after it. Every honest programme includes a second visit two or three weeks later, and a quote that makes no mention of one is a quote for half a job. Nobody wants to hear that either, least of all the people who have just paid for the first visit.

What keeps them down once the treatment is finished?

Pheromone traps catch males. Males only, because the lure imitates the female’s scent. They tell you whether adults are flying and roughly where, which makes them a survey tool, and they are sold to householders as a solution while the females carry on laying six feet away. I say this to clients constantly and it lands badly about a third of the time. A trap catching nothing tells you very little on its own, because a flightless population feeding happily inside a sofa base will register as a clean sheet of card for months.

The trap on the mantelpiece is a thermometer

The dull routine beats anything I can sell. Shift heavy furniture and vacuum beneath it every three months, skirting strip included. Empty the machine into an outside bin. Rotate cushions so no face stays dark and undisturbed for a year at a stretch. Keep an eye on wool rugs rolled under beds, which is where a good number of the Highbury New Park infestations I attend seem to have started.

You do not need me every year. No soiling, no damage, no reason – a professional clean at that point is a comfort purchase, and I would rather say so than take the booking. Nobody wants to hear that from a cleaner, though for different reasons.

The chimney-breast sofa went out to a re-upholsterer in the end. Under the old hessian, in the groove between the two rear rails, there were forty-odd empty pupal cases packed in like grains of rice.
